Das Erste European Software Festival fand am 19. und 20. Februar 1991 im Gasteig Kulturzentrum in München statt. Veranstalter war die Borland GmbH, die im Mai 1990 vollständig von Borland International übernommen worden war und seitdem als deutsche Tochtergesellschaft des US-amerikanischen Softwareunternehmens operierte. Die Veranstaltung verstand sich als interdisziplinäres Forum an der Schnittstelle von Computertechnologie, Kunst, Philosophie und Gesellschaft. Nach zeitgenössischen Berichten zog sie über 3.000 Besucher an.
